Yesterday was International Women’s Day and as I went to sleep last night I reflected on how full my heart was. My heart was filled with the female empowerment and love that permeated the social media landscape yesterday.
Here’s just a few of the amazing women who filled my multiple (yes I am a social media junkie are you really surprised?) newfeeds all day yesterday:
1. My co-worker, friend, and peer Kelsey Jenkins:
2. My classmate and friend Yamini Coen:
3. My wonderful, sassy and dear friend Courtney Collard:
4. My co-worker, amazon goddess and friend Juliana Meloche:
5. And…. the K to my J, my colleague, spirit animal and friend Krystal Stukas:
I am proud to call these women my friends and they inspire me to be a better feminist in countless ways. Yesterday was such a fantastic day filled with female empowerment and it was so wonderful to see so many people speaking out and showing support for one another.
But as I scrolled through my social media newsfeed I couldn’t help but wonder why can’t we show this sort of radical support for women everyday? I believe a day for appreciating women’s contributions is very important. But it shouldn’t be exclusive to one day a year.
Ladies, we don’t need an international day tell us to support each other, we need to start showing support for women everyday.
“EMPOWERED WOMEN, EMPOWER WOMEN.”
The feminist agenda can’t focus exculsively on the women we look up to like Michelle Obama, Emma Watson, and Gloria Steinem. These women are so important but what’s just as important is seeing the women around us stick up for themselves and the women around them on a daily basis. Progress for women doesn’t come from showing radical support for the feminist agenda only one day a year. Progress comes from all of us, as we battle our way to equality every single day.
We are surrounded with inspiration for female empowerment every day. Each individual woman should be acknowledged for her work and her contribution to the advancement of equality. To my friends Kelsey, Yamini, Courtney, Juliana and Krystal – THANK YOU for your posts, for empowering me and the women who surround you not only yesterday but everyday.
So ladies let’s start treating every day as if it were International Women’s day. Together we are are collective of individuals who are, through the small simple actions of supporting one another, creating a big change.
